Condition Guide

Bipolar Disorder

With the right treatment, people with bipolar disorder live full, stable lives.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. These shifts — between manic or hypomanic highs and depressive lows — can be intense and disruptive. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, but with proper treatment and support, most people are able to manage their symptoms and lead fulfilling lives.

Common Symptoms

  • Manic episodes: elevated or irritable mood, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, impulsive behavior
  • Depressive episodes: persistent sadness, fatigue, loss of interest, hopelessness
  • Hypomanic episodes: similar to mania but less severe
  • Rapid cycling between mood states
  • Difficulty maintaining relationships or work during episodes

Common Causes

  • Strong genetic component — family history is a major risk factor
  • Brain structure and chemistry differences
  • Environmental triggers such as stress or sleep disruption
  • Substance use can trigger or worsen episodes
