Condition Guide

OCD

OCD is highly treatable — you can break free from the cycle.

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety. OCD can center around any theme — contamination, harm, symmetry, relationships, and more. It is not about being 'neat' or 'particular' — OCD causes real distress and can consume significant time and energy.

Common Symptoms

  • Intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges
  • Intense anxiety triggered by obsessions
  • Repetitive behaviors or mental rituals to reduce anxiety
  • Temporary relief from compulsions, followed by the cycle repeating
  • Significant time spent on obsessions and compulsions
  • Avoidance of triggers

Common Causes

  • Genetic factors
  • Brain chemistry differences
  • Learned behavioral patterns
  • Stressful or traumatic life events
