Condition Guide

Schizophrenia

Compassionate, expert care can help you manage schizophrenia and live well.

What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality, which can be distressing for them and for those around them. While schizophrenia requires long-term treatment, many people with the condition are able to manage their symptoms and lead meaningful lives with the right support.

Common Symptoms

  • Hallucinations — hearing or seeing things others do not
  • Delusions — strongly held false beliefs
  • Disorganized thinking or speech
  • Flat or reduced emotional expression
  • Difficulty with motivation and daily functioning
  • Social withdrawal

Common Causes

  • Genetic factors — higher risk with family history
  • Brain chemistry and structure differences
  • Environmental factors during development
  • Substance use, particularly cannabis in adolescence
  • Stressful life events may trigger onset in vulnerable individuals
