Panic Disorder

Panic attacks are frightening but treatable — relief is possible.

What is Panic Disorder?

Panic disorder involves recurrent, unexpected panic attacks — sudden surges of intense fear that peak within minutes. People with panic disorder often live in fear of the next attack, which can lead to significant changes in behavior and avoidance of situations associated with panic. Effective treatment can dramatically reduce or eliminate panic attacks.

Common Symptoms

  • Racing or pounding heart
  • Shortness of breath or feeling smothered
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or faintness
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Fear of losing control or 'going crazy'
  • Persistent worry about future panic attacks

Common Causes

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Heightened sensitivity to physical sensations
  • Stressful life events or major transitions
  • Other anxiety disorders
  • Certain medical conditions
