Condition Guide

Psychosis

Early treatment for psychosis leads to significantly better outcomes.

What is Psychosis?

Psychosis is a symptom — not a diagnosis — in which a person loses touch with reality. It can occur in several conditions including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, and others. Psychosis can be frightening for the person experiencing it and for those around them, but with prompt, appropriate treatment, many people recover fully or significantly.

Common Symptoms

  • Hallucinations — hearing, seeing, or feeling things that are not there
  • Delusions — strongly held false beliefs
  • Disorganized thinking or speech
  • Confused or disturbed thoughts
  • Lack of insight into one's own condition
  • Changes in behavior or personality

Common Causes

  • Mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
  • Severe depression
  • Substance use or withdrawal
  • Medical conditions affecting the brain
  • Extreme stress or sleep deprivation
