Social Anxiety

Social anxiety doesn't have to hold you back — treatment works.

What is Social Anxiety?

Social anxiety disorder involves intense fear of social situations where you might be judged, embarrassed, or humiliated. It goes far beyond shyness — it can prevent people from forming relationships, advancing in their careers, or participating in everyday activities. Social anxiety is one of the most common anxiety disorders and responds well to treatment.

Common Symptoms

  • Intense fear of social or performance situations
  • Worry about being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated
  • Avoidance of social situations or enduring them with great distress
  • Physical symptoms: blushing, sweating, trembling, nausea
  • Difficulty making eye contact or speaking in groups
  • Replaying social interactions and focusing on perceived mistakes

Common Causes

  • Genetic factors
  • Negative social experiences or bullying
  • Overprotective or critical parenting styles
  • Temperament — naturally shy or inhibited
  • Other anxiety disorders
